Recently, users in India and other parts of the world experienced outages on major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
These disruptions caused issues such as login problems, forced logouts, and the inability to refresh feeds or change passwords. Services were swiftly restored, highlighting the importance of these platforms in global communication and the impact of their downtime on users’ digital lives.
During a recent digital hiccup, users of the Facebook and Instagram platforms were greeted with frustrating notifications prompting them to log in again, signaling that their sessions had expired, and informing them that their feeds could not be refreshed.
This unexpected inconvenience began to unfold around 8:30 pm on a Tuesday 5th March, causing a stir among the online community reliant on these platforms for their daily dose of social media interaction.
The well-known website for monitoring service interruptions, Downdetector.com, disclosed that Meta Platforms’ social media giants, Facebook and Instagram, experienced significant downtimes, affecting tens of thousands of users on Tuesday.
According to the data gathered by the site, which aggregates outage reports from various sources, including direct user feedback, Facebook saw over 300,000 outage reports, whereas Instagram faced more than 20,000 reports.
This widespread disruption highlights the vast reach and impact of these platforms on daily digital communication.
Based on information from Reuters, it was noted that Meta’s own status dashboard indicated difficulties with the application programming interface (API) for WhatsApp Business, pointing to broader issues beyond just social networking sites.
Downdetector, a platform that aggregates data on service disruptions from a variety of inputs, including user experiences, recorded approximately 200 outage reports specifically for WhatsApp. This situation underscores the interconnected challenges faced by Meta’s suite of services.
Services made a comeback by 10 pm on Tuesday, marking an end to the temporary digital blackout.
In response to the outage, Meta quickly addressed the issue.
